# Managing a Dashboard

This chapter describes the actions you can perform on a dashboard.

## Permissions

[Channels](https://lucidum.io/docs/channels/) control your permissions.

- If a dashboard is in a channel where you have read-only privileges, you will have read-only privileges for the member dashboards.
- If a dashboard is in a channel where you have read-write privileges, you will have read-write privileges for the member dashboards.

You can edit:

- Dashboards you create. For details on creating a dashboard, see the chapter on [Creating a Dashboard](https://lucidum.io/docs/creating-a-dashboard/).
- Dashboards that you import via JSON file. For details on exporting and importing dashboards, see the chapter on [Exporting and Importing a Dashboard](https://lucidum.io/docs/exporting-and-importing-a-dashboard/).
- Dashboards that you have copied to a channel where you have read-write privileges. For details, see the section in the chapter on [Copying a Dashboard](https://lucidum.io/docs/managing-a-dashboard/#copying_a_dashboard).

## Editing the Layout of a Dashboard

By default, when you save a dashboard, Lucidum locks the dashboard layout. When a dashboard is locked, you cannot change the layout of the dashboard.

When a dashboard is unlocked, you can:

- change the position of the charts in the dashboard
- change the size of each chart in the dashboard

To unlock and lock a dashboard:

1. Log in to your Lucidum system.
2. In the left menu, click **Dashboards.**
3. In the **Channel**pane, click the channel where the dashboard lives.
4. In the right pane, find the dashboard you want to edit. Click the dashboard name.
5. Lucidum loads the dashboard.

   ![dashboards_edit_layout_updated.png](https://lucidum.cloud/docs/dashboards_edit_layout_updated.png)
6. In the dashboard page, click the **Modify Chart Layout**(lock) icon.

   - To resize a chart, click and hold while dragging the drag-bar in the lower-right corner.
   - To move a chart, click and hold under the chart title and drag the chart to its new position.
7. To save your changes, click the click the **Modify Chart Layout**(lock) icon again.

## Creating a Global Filter

A global filter is a parent filter that is applied to all queries and all charts in a specific Dashboard.

1. To create a global filter:
2. [Open the dashboard](https://lucidum.io/docs/viewing-a-dashboard/#viewing_a_dashboard) you want to add a filter to.

   ![global_filter_22.0_1.png](https://lucidum.cloud/docs/global_filter_22.0_1.png)
3. Click on the **Refine Scope**(funnel) button.
4. In the **Build a Query**page, [create a query](https://lucidum.io/docs/creating-queries-2/#creating-a-query-from-the-query-button) as you normally would.

   ![global_filter_query_updated.png](https://lucidum.cloud/docs/global_filter_query_updated.png)
5. Click **Apply**to apply the query to all charts in the current dashboard.
6. The new filter appears to the left of the **Refine Scope**button.
7. The new filter is applied to all the charts and queries in the dashboard.

   ![global_filter_22.0_2.png](https://lucidum.cloud/docs/dashboards_apply_global_filter_updated.png)
8. In our example, we created a query that filtered assets by the Country Code match United States. Notice how the value in the “Workstations” chart, the “Servers & VMn” chart, and the Containers & Microservices chart has changed after we applied the global filter. This is because all queries and charts include only assets with the Country Name “United States”.

## Choosing a Default Dashboard

If you have not pinned a dashboard as the default dashboard, the [Home page](https://lucidum.io/docs/introduction-to-getting-started-with-lucidum/#home_page) appears.

After you pin a dashboard, the pinned dashboard appears upon log in.

You do not have to have read-write permissions to set a dashboard as your default. You need only read permissions for that dashboard.

To change the default dashboard:

1. Log in to your Lucidum system.
2. In the left menu, click **Dashboards.**
3. In the **Channel**pane, click the channel where the dashboard lives.
4. In the right pane, find the dashboard you want to set as default
5. Click on its **Pin**(push-pin) icon. The pin icon becomes solid, and the pinned dashboard moves to the top of the list of dashboards in the channel.
